Review of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!

Bore 'em or disappoint 'em - even once - and they'll turn on you and tear you to pieces, regardless of who you are or might once have been.

I was remembering this quote a lot while watching bomkesh. The version 2.0. A geniune makeover of one of the most important characters of Bengali Crime fictions......
Ok.... First thing first , you should completely flush the idea that you have developed about Bomkesh from the previous adaptions made by famous directors. The doordarshan series, chiriyakhana by satyajit ray ( i think the movie was a huge mistake) , anjan dutt's bomkesh trilogy ( introducing abir as byomkesh and saswata as ajit was brilliant. Most importantly abir got into the character so well) , satyanwesi by rituporno ghosh ( i generally don't call this a Bomkesh movie. It was more like ajit to the rescue and bomkesh always staring like a dead fish) gave us an idea about a tall and handsome clean shaved man with razor sharp intelligence... But Dibakar banerjee doesn't tell us the story of the old Bakshi babu, he depicts the tale of BYOMKESH BAKSHY bakshi with a Y!
The film is based on the very first story of bomkesh i.e satyanwesi. Bomkesh's first case, when he was new in the game. So satyanwesi is all about him stumbling infront of the bad asses, missing the evident clues and realizing about it later, vomitting when he see a dead body, having traumma, feeling broken, it's also about meeting ajeet, who would become his so called side kick in near future... Dibakar banerjee tried to create a intriguing script but while he was too busy making some unnecessary caharacters and sub plots, he left a noticable number of loose ends. The script is poor, some times the screen play lacks speed, editing is also immature. The worst thing you could do to a detective movie is making it unnecessarily lengthy and byomkesh is cursed with this mistake. And the script is so shallow that even if you haven't read the original story you will recognise the villain a lot before than byomkesh and that kills the thrill. I will not reveal anything about the story but it can be said that the expectations should be low from the script... Dibakar banerjee has a excellent crew of production designers , and that is evident when we see the old calcutta sapped in the smell of opium, blood, japanese bombing's threat, anglo culture, babuana and pop culture. Dibakar banerjee has successfully made kolkata one of the central characters of his movie. Attention to details is also praise worthy.
When you talk about a movies it's incomplete if you don't mention the actors.. Susant singh rajpoot is no doubt a good actor but i am slightly disappointed at him , he takes more than 30 mins of the first half to get into the shows of the character properly, which is a little bit awkward. But when he is in the flow he is a delight to watch. His portrayl is largely inspired by Bbc sherlock, hercule poirot and many more of the famous detectives... Ànand tiwari as ajit does his job perfectly , infact this was the first time i liked someone as ajit as much as i do when i see anjan's ajit.. Sastika banerjee had nothing to do without appearing pretty on screen and talking in husky voice with moist eyes. Her first bwood appearance will be forgotten right after the movie. ( some may remember her for the raunchy scenes). Vidya menon as satyawati tried her best, but the script had a very little to offer her. However the main asset of the movie is the villain of the movie, neeraj kabi literally steals the show. You will know that it's not necessary to scream and make awkard rude faces while playing a villain, a simple innocent stare, a low wellbehaved accent , a smile can also do the job. Hats off. Hence in my opinion the movies gets a 8 in acting depertment..
God will not forgive me if i finish it without mentioning about sneha khanwalkar.. She is the one who have shown courage to introduce mallcore, nu metal, industrial thrash metal in a bwood movie. If you are into hard rock the music album will be a treat to you... Life's a bitch, chase in chinatown, byomkesh in love, calcutta kiss everything fits the scenes, a huge bow!!
The movie has an open ending, and i'm already excited for the next installment as i can see a huge potential in bakshy babu.
